For teens: Why and how to stay busy this summer while stuck at home
Over the past several weeks, I have participated in multiple calls with college admissions counsellors. It is clear to me that you should expect to see supplementary questions related to COVID-19 on college applications on what staying at home has meant for you. While indications thus far are that such questions will be optional, I suggest that you consider this a potential opportunity.
“An opportunity for what?” You may ask; and I am glad that you did.
College admissions counselors will likely receive a deluge of essays about all things COVID-19. Consider passing on this as the topic for your main essay, instead, using optional responses to wow admissions counselors with your phenomenal ability to stay busy and be involved, despite trying times.
“What can I do when I am basically stuck at home with nothing, I said NADA, to do?” You may ask; and I am glad that you did.
A few weeks ago, I wowed you with a myriad of reasons why you should and can volunteer virtually during the summer break. This week, I am going to share four more stimulating ideas to help you stay sane and stay sharp.
Idea # 1:
Spend some time learning for learning’s sake: take a FREE online class. See below for links to courses in topics ranging from bugs to dinosaurs to guitar to calculus to computer programming to astronomy to Japanese. I think you get my drift; you can learn about pretty much anything! Check out the following links to get started:

Idea # 2:
Start a virtual book club. What better way to connect with your peers than to choose a book to read and discuss? Zoom is free. I would be happy to moderate a virtual book club; please let me know if you are interested.
Idea # 3:
If you are a rising senior, work on your college applications. If you need help, please contact me.
Idea # 4:
If you are a rising junior, make an initial college list and attend virtual information sessions. If you need help with your list, please contact me.
Stay healthy. Stay hopeful.
